Business Small Talk: What It Is (and Why It Matters)

Read Aloud: Business Small Talk in Action
Reading aloud helps you practise rhythm, tone, and confidence.
Read each dialogue slowly and clearly. Focus on sounding relaxed, not perfect.
Script 1: Before a Team Meeting
A: Hi, good morning. Thanks for joining a bit early.
B: Morning. No problem at all. How’s your week going so far?
A: Pretty busy, actually, but productive. How about yours?
B: Much the same. Lots of back-to-back meetings.
A: I can imagine. Well, shall we get started?
Script 2: Starting a Client Call
A: Hi everyone, thanks for making the time today.
B: Of course. Happy to be here.
A: Hope your day’s going well so far.
B: Yes, thanks. It’s been a full morning, but all good.
A: Great. Let’s take a look at the agenda and then we can go from there.
Script 3: Networking Event (Professional but Friendly)
A: Hi, I don’t think we’ve met yet. I’m Alex.
B: Hi Alex, nice to meet you. I’m Sam.
A: Nice to meet you too. Are you attending the conference today or just the networking event?
B: I’m here for both. It’s been quite interesting so far.
A: Yes, I agree. There’s been a lot of useful discussion.
